Bottlenose Dolphin Essay
By: Mike Age: 12
There is a mammal that
might be as smart as man, who has been a mystery to scientists for years, it
is the Bottlenose Dolphin, also known as Tursiops Truncatas. They are
beautiful marine creatures located in warm and temperate waters all around
the globe. Unlike many other beautiful unusual lifeforms on the earth, the
bottlenose dolphin is not endangered and this may be due to its superior
intelligence. There are at least 40 known species of dolphins.
The average bottlenose dolphin is about 10 – 12 feet long and
can weigh as much as 1,400 pounds (635 kg). Dolphins breathe through a
blowhole, which is on the top of their head. The blowhole allows them stay
mostly in the water when they come to the surface to breathe. The air force
from the blowhole is 200 mph! That force of air allows no rain or water to
go into the blowhole. They have a dorsal fin, flippers, a blowhole, and a
fluke tail. The dolphin’s speed and power comes from its fluke tail. In
general, dolphins can reach speeds of 20 mph. At that speed, it is very
difficult for them to see. So to help them navigate through the water
dolphins use sonar. The sonar waves bounces back if there is an object in
front of them.
The bottlenose dolphins
live in pods like whales. Most pods average 12 dolphins. They are social
creatures and can be friendly and peaceful. However, the dominant male or
the leader can be very aggressive and violent in certain situations.
Dolphins are mammals and are very similar to humans. Dolphins
may actually be as smart as us in some respects. Some researchers believe
that dolphins have their own language. If you are in a tank with dolphins
you might hear unknown sounds they use but they are really communicating
with other dolphins. Some researchers believe that each dolphin has its own
signature whistle, which allows other dolphins to know who is talking or
sending out messages. They also believe that the sound of the “whistle”
varies from the different types of dolphins.
The brain weight of the average human is about 1550 grams. Yet, the
average dolphin’s brain weight is 1800 grams. Scientists think it weighs
more because dolphins need to remember the different types of sounds and
sonar purposes. That fact alone can support that dolphins are as smart as
us!
Some people think that
dolphins and sharks are somewhat the same, which is incorrect. Dolphins are
nowhere near related to sharks except that they live in the water. Sharks
are fish unlike dolphins and sharks have a much lower IQ level. Dolphins
and sharks don’t live in peace together. Most people think of sharks
killing dolphins but it is the opposite. Dolphins have a strong mouth that
when used correctly can damage the shark immensely, even killing them. Also
their IQ helps them against sharks and other enemies.
The ancestors of dolphins are whales and porpoises. Some
scientists say that the ancestors were once land mammals called ungulates
(which were hoofed mammals). Then, about 50 million years ago they started
to evolve into marine life. Then, about 10 million years ago they finally
evolved into dolphins, as we know them today.
Did you know that dolphins (not just the bottlenose dolphins)
are used in the Navy? The program began in 1960 so they could test
dolphin’s abilities and how well their sonar works. Dolphins are ideal for
the navy because dolphins are real smart and have sonar to detect objects.
So far they were used in Vietnam and in the Persian Gulf War. During the
Cold War this program was at its peak. It had over 100 dolphins at the
time. But, when the Cold War was over the program got less important and it
downsized. But, they still use them today except for less important tasks.
Maybe, in the future, dolphins will become a strong army in the US Navy and
help with underwater tasks and maybe dominate the underwater frontline!
Dolphins are unbelievable creatures that move gracefully
through the ocean. Dolphins are one of the most beloved marine life
creatures. Dolphins are amazing mammals and remain a mystery to
scientists. I really enjoyed doing this essay!
